Abstract
Several new cases of vivax malaria occurred in the northern part of Kyunggi province of South Korea in 1993-1994, at least 10 years after a successful eradication. Recently, we experienced an indigenous case of vivax malaria in a young man who
had
never
been abroad and had no history of blood transfusion or parenteral use of drug. He was a 23year old Korean soldier who had retired 1 week before the onset of illness. He was admitted to Korea university Anam hospital due to a 3 day-cycle fever
with
chills on september 7, 1994. Thick blood smear showd typical ring forms and tropozoites of P. vivax in red blood cells. He was recovered with administration of hydroxychloroquine and subsequent primaquine. We presume this case to be one in a
series
from
small outbreak in the northern part of South Korea near DMZ. Therefore, we report this case to emphasize the need of active surveillance.
